Essential Info:
We will open the doors at 8AM to begin donation drop-off. If you have a number of donations, please bring them earlier than later, so others will have time to rummage through what you brought. If you would like to put your donations out on the tables yourself, please do so. If you do not put them out, please leave them with a volunteer and they will put them out for you. Then shop until you drop! Please take anything you can use! All that remains after 2PM will be donated to a local thrift store. These donations are not only for children, please feel free to donate and shop for the entire family. Also, remember to save all homeschooling items for the resource giveaway that takes place in July, but feel free to bring anything other gently used items.
Volunteers are appreciated and needed (please sign-up on the FISH Calendar). As a Thank You for your work, a baked potato and sweet potato bar is available to anyone who helps that day! Please bring a topping to share. Volunteers please sign up by Friday, March 6th so we know how many potatoes to prepare.
Also, this event is open to anyone! So please forward to others you think would be interested in coming.
The Inspiration:
Last year all of my children (I have 4) hit growth spurts at the same time! All at once they outgrew their shoes, jackets, pants, shirts, even shorts, and two of my boys were the same size. So hand me downs weren’t even an option for my 3rd son, as we had normally done in the past. It really broke the budget for our family and I whined about it to anyone who would listen.
**Sorry to anyone who had to put up with my complaining!**
God had a plan because I have a friend who is a member of another homeschooling group who hosts a free rummage every spring and autumn. She invited me to bring any hand-me-downs I was accumulating and come shop with her for free!!! I couldn’t believe my ears! It was fantastic! I took home nearly as much as I brought to give away (which was a lot with all 4 having hardly anything that still fit). I didn’t find everything I was hoping to find, but it did take the pressure off of our wallet and we were then able to buy all the missing links in our children’s wardrobe. I even found a few things for myself. And my daughter found so many toys she still talks about that shopping trip, lol. It was a beautiful experience, and I asked the ladies there how it was that they had decided to do such a good thing and everyone of them told the same story:
Once upon a time (about 30 years ago) a woman at church saw the sweatshirt that was being worn by a boy she knew and after complimenting the boy’s mother on the nice sweatshirt, learned that she had just purchased it from a local thrift store. The very same thrift store that the woman had just donated the sweatshirt that her son had recently outgrown. The woman thought, what a shame that I didn't just hand the sweatshirt off to you. But how was the original owner of that sweatshirt to know that the other family was looking for something like that? They brainstormed and found a solution, the free rummage!
I hope this event is just as much of a blessing to the FISH group as it has been to the original homeschooling group that came up with this fantastic idea.
